The University of Notre Dame received a $262,500 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Higher Education National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program. The grant will support the establishment of the Graduate Program in Agricultural Biosecurity and Data Science, which will provide training to five PhD students and three postdoctoral fellows. The program uniquely integrates coursework, lab rotations, research projects, teaching, internships, and international travel experiences to develop competencies in major agricultural sustainability and biosecurity concepts, quantitative and research skills, interdisciplinary collaboration, and communication and leadership abilities. The goal is to address the national need for a highly trained, multicultural agricultural workforce prepared for interdisciplinary work in a global environment. The University will match additional funds to support two more graduate students. All fellows are expected to be placed in agriculturally-related jobs upon completion of the program, fulfilling the measurable target of the January 2021 to January 2026 award period.
