This five-year, $262,500 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture will support a graduate training program under the Higher Education National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program. The program seeks to diversify the agricultural field by providing master's level coursework, experiential learning opportunities, and leadership development for underrepresented students in transformative agricultural systems. Key components include agroecology and resilience curriculum, internships with community organizations working on food security, cohort-based transdisciplinary seminars, and potential for international research experiences. In addition, fellows will be encouraged to take on leadership roles in the Minority Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences organization to develop skills beyond academic work. The Regents of the University of Michigan will oversee delivery of these products and services as the sole sub-awardee through their Office of Research and Sponsored Projects.
