This $262,500 National Institute of Food and Agriculture project grant will support training of three PhD scientists through the University of Minnesota's National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program. The program aims to address gaps in animal health and well-being knowledge for the US dairy industry by emphasizing technical skills gained from thesis research, deeper learning of food production systems and safety regulation, and leadership development. Fellows will complete experiential learning, including an IRTA fellowship with USDA-APHIS, to understand regulatory medicine. Upon graduating, scientists will be equipped to immediately translate new research findings to emerging problems in the industry through scientific expertise, interdisciplinary collaboration, practical global food systems knowledge, policy influence, and effective communication. This aligns with the stated goal of the Higher Education National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program to train students for advanced degrees and postdoctoral training that can promote food safety and security nationally and globally.
