Description

The mission of the sierra joint office on aging is to establish a continuum of social support and health services to meet the needs of elderly individuals and maximize their independence, enabling them to live successfully on their own terms in their own communities. The goal is to ensure the use of all available resources and serve as an advocate for the elderly population. An estimated 7 senior companions will serve. They will provide companionship to elderly seniors in our community. Areas of service will include the VA home (when a client is unable to be in their home due to illness or injury) and private residences. The primary focus area of this project is to encourage healthy aging by providing companionship to support independent living, the ability to identify individuals at risk and to intervene to prevent loneliness and depression which aggravate chronic health problems. At the end of the 12-month performance period we anticipate to decrease the instances of loneliness and depression of those elderly who are today without intervention of which companionship provides.
