Description
The purpose is to adhere to an enhanced training, prevention, intervention, and enforcement model by reinforcing and expanding upon current endeavors utilized by the department and partnering agencies. CPD will seek to reduce gun violence using a focused deterrence approach with data-driven and intelligence-led policing techniques, coupled with recommendations from the PSP site assessment. Project activities include enhancing a gun violence prevention model by partnering with the city of chattanooga office of community engagement, the public safety director, and the hamilton county department of education. Within CPD, the project will broaden the capabilities of units as IT relates to technology to bolster the quality of cases for prosecution as well as enhance the knowledge and experience of officers by expanding their current training capabilities to ensure that the CPD has the most well-trained officers in the region. Externally, the project will continue partnership with trajectory changing services on an intervention approach utilizing violence interrupters in a more targeted manner (i.e., service area). The intended beneficiaries of this grant will be at-risk youth who, without viable outlets and options afforded by this opportunity, would likely fall into the realm of firearm violence; victims of gun violence who would not get the proper justice without the enhanced investigative technology to mitigate diminishing manpower assets from the CPD; and CPD officers and investigators who will receive the most up-to-date training, thus allowing the successful investigation into prolific gun violence offenders. The intended service area will be the small area of chattanooga besieged by gun violence; 80 percent of gun violence occurs in roughly 24 percent (33 square miles) of the city. Enhancing a prevention, intervention, enforcement, and follow-through model focusing on these locations will be a priority.
