The Dekalb County District Attorney's Office in Decatur, Georgia will receive $496,045 from the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Missing and Unidentified Human Remains (MUHR) Program (CFDA 16.050) from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2025. The funding will support cataloging, investigating, and reporting on 27 unidentified human remains stored at or buried by the Dekalb County Medical Examiner's Office dating back to 1987. A forensic anthropologist will conduct skeletal surveys to further catalog the remains. Funds will also be used to exhume already buried bodies, expand the medical examiner's capacity through supplies and equipment, hire advisors to determine next steps in identification like advanced DNA testing, and outreach to families to build genealogical trees to identify remains which will then be returned to families. The project aims to identify numerous sets of remains and provide answers to long-lost missing loved ones.
