Description
The university police department (UPD) southern command seeks FY25 community policing development (CPD) microgrants funding to launch the university police department community police academy designed to uplift the image of law enforcement by demystifying police work and humanizing the badge through fostering cooperative engagement through education. The community police academy (CPA) will be a free 8-week program held twice a year and open to all members of nshe campus communities. Curriculum topics include scenario-based modules covering defensive tactics, constitutional law, investigations, traffic stops, and use-of-force. Each weekly three-hour class will be interactive and include participation from several institutional partners/teams. What makes upds proposal innovative, and novel is the potential for CPA participation to be integrated into an undergraduate/graduate course yielding college credit, or non-credit course yielding micro-credentials. The funds requested will support initial program development, participating officer overtime, scenario training supplies, and impact evaluation. Most importantly, the community police academy will help UPD and the institutions IT serves build mutual understanding and strengthen bridges across a community still recovering from the trauma of a campus shooting.
