Description

The challenges that come with a school district whose oldest building was erected in 1894 and an average facilities age of 70 years old require a significant investment of funds to keep the district operational at the level needed to ensure students safety and prevent instances of school violence from impacting students and staff. The cost of various safety and security enhancements meant to deter and stop school violence is estimated to be over $675,000. Meeting the needs of buildings that were constructed so many years ago, given the state of how school buildings were designed in this ERA, presents significant challenges. Creating a safe and secure school building is possible, and in line with recommendations from the site vulnerability risk assessment to ensure all campuses remain secure and safe without obtrusions which resemble correctional environments. Therefore, the school would maintain its key architectural functions as a learning institution, and various measures which ensure that student safety and wellbeing beyond the currently implemented preventative measures will coincide with the project as proposed. MT. Morris consolidated schools will continue to leverage its partnerships with local and county public safety officials to ensure that the measures which are partially funded by the united states department of justice are implemented with fidelity and in perpetuity beyond the project completion date. This includes regular inspections, safety audits, risk assessments, drills, and tabletop exercises to meet the goals of reduced incidents at the school building and increased perceptions of safety by all stakeholders. These activities will be monitored for successful completion beyond the grant period as part of a comprehensive safety teams activities, which include frequent review and updating of the emergency operations plans, vulnerability assessments, data review on student incidents and possible causes, staff professional development, and methods to provide support for students who have been involved in violent school disciplinary incidents to minimize and eliminate the level of criminalization of student offenses.
