Description
Swampscott public schools is seeking assistance for the next phase of our safety and security improvements that are in conjunction with our partners, swampscott police department. "i love u guys & the standard response protocol" program: this program will be integrated into our existing emergency response protocols and procedures. We have identified a need for a standardized and consistent approach to emergency situations, as our current practices vary across schools and can cause confusion during crisis events. By implementing this program, we will align our response protocols with a widely recognized and evidence-based model. Training sessions will be conducted for all staff, students, and police personnel to ensure a consistent understanding and application of the protocols. This program is free, but the overtime for our swampscott police officers to be trained is a cost to be supported by this grant. Behavioral threat assessment and management (btam) training: the btam training provided by navigate 360 as cstag will be integrated into our existing efforts to support students' mental health and well-being. Through collaboration with district staff and the swampscott police department, we will identify students at risk for violent behavior and proactively respond to their needs. The training will enable US to implement evidence-based practices for identifying, assessing, and managing potential threats. Cstag will complete our ability to assess risk for students; where before we would only be well equipped to respond to suicidal ideation or self-harm, we would now have evidence-based protocols and practices for assessing risk of harm to others without needing to wait a significant amount of time for costly external forensic psychology reports that are divorced from the school context. This program has a cost for the training, and we will also need to support the overtime for our swampscott police officers to be trained is a cost to be supported by this grant. Upgraded public address (PA) system: our current system is failing and has an outdated interface that requires someone to enter into the technology MDF closet to operate the functions. While we can page from telephones, there is no option to do anything offsite, remotely, or if the phone lines are down. The system is not able to work in our GYM or our senior center. Our current system outdated and unreliable and goes down several times a year. The new system will provide enhanced capabilities such as duress response, pre-programmed emergency messages, and two-way communication between the office and individual rooms. These features will enable efficient and effective communication during emergencies, drills, and daily announcements, fostering a positive learning environment and ensuring the safety of all students and staff. The duress response is particularly attractive as the system offers US a way to have dedicated mounted kiosks in high capacity places for duress calls to be sent. Improved camera system and connectivity: the upgrade to our camera system and the establishment of a VPN connection to the police station will fill the gaps we have identified in our surveillance and monitoring capabilities. Our current cameras are aging and many are non-functional, limiting our ability to monitor critical areas. By improving camera stability and connectivity, we will enhance real-time visibility, enabling US to promptly address safety concerns, monitor instances of bullying, and ensure a secure school environment. The connection to the police station will facilitate collaborative efforts between law enforcement and school personnel, enabling a coordinated response in emergency situations. These interventions have been specifically chosen to address the identified gaps and needs, ensuring that our strategies align with best practices and are effective in creating a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
