The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $400,000 Project Grant under the Geographic Programs - Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (CFDA 66.469) to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The grant provides funding to the DNR to administer a project addressing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in the St. Louis River coastal wetlands and adjacent shorelines. Key activities include determining the location, extent, and impact of known AIS infestations, discovering pioneer populations through early detection, sharing information with partners on previous monitoring and management efforts, and implementing rapid response and AIS management. The project aims to conduct two annual exercises for rapid AIS response, prevention, and control, with expected outcomes of improved fish and wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and resilience in the coastal wetlands and restoration sites under the Lake Superior Area of Concern. The grant period runs from September 1, 2024 to September 30, 2027, and no sub-awards are included.
