Description

This program is in collaboration with the minnesota department of agriculture (MDA) laboratory. The MDA lab has endorsed white earth's qmprp and is responsible for conducting analyses on behalf of the tribe to assess pesticide residues in various environmental media. Two primary analytical methods are employed in this project: gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The GC/MS/MS method targets 38 different compounds, while the LC/MS/MS method covers an extensive list of 137 analytes, including various fungicides, herbicides, rodenticides, and insecticides commonly used in pine point and other agricultural areas within the reservation boundaries. Sample collection adheres to standard operating procedures (SOP) outlined in the qmprp. Specifically, wild rice and water samples are obtained from the same locations at each sampling site. Detailed surface water field data are collected and documented, encompassing information such as date, time, water temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, PH, turbidity, conductivity, weather conditions, air temperature, wind speed, DEW point, and humidity. Before collecting wild rice samples, the density of the wild rice bed at the sampling site is assessed using a one-meter quadrat and recorded. Wild rice samples are obtained by carefully uprooting the entire plant, including its roots. Measurements are taken for the length of the stalk and roots, and these values are documented. In some cases, the roots and stalks of wild rice may be analyzed separately to investigate potential differences in the storage and uptake of various analytes. Each sampling site yields three surface water samples and three wild rice samples, where wild rice is present. These samples are designated for different purposes, including GC analysis, LC analysis, and specific testing for glyphosate, glufosinate, and ampa compounds. This project aims to provide valuable insights into pesticide residues in the environment and their potential impact on the white earth tribe's agricultural regions.activities:the project involves the following key activities: 1. Implementation of a quality management program plan (qmprp) for collecting pesticide-related samples. 2. Collaboration with the minnesota department of agriculture (MDA) laboratory for sample analysis. 3. Utilization of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) methods for pesticide residue analysis. 4. Collection of wild rice and water samples at designated sampling sites. 5. Documentation of surface water field data, including various environmental parameters. 6. Measurement and documentation of wild rice bed density, stalk length, and root length. 7. Separation of wild rice roots and stalks for potential separate analysis. 8. Proper handling of wild rice samples according to established standard operating procedures (SOP). 9. Collection of three surface water samples and three wild rice samples at each site for specific analyses, including GC, LC, and testing for glyphosate, glufosinate, and ampa compounds. Subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:project outcomes: 1) identification of pesticides of interest and pesticides of concern: the analysis will yield information to identify specific pesticides that are of interest due to their presence and potential environmental impact. IT will also highlight pesticides of concern, which may have adverse effects on the environment. 2) informed sampling and monitoring plans: the project outcomes will guide the development of future sampling and monitoring plans, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to areas with identified pesticide concerns. 3) integr
