The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) will survey and treat invasive Phragmites stands in the Lake Superior region through a $247,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Project Grant. Over the three year grant period ending July 2024, MNDNR and partners will survey at least 3,500 miles of road, 200 miles of railroad, and 3,000 miles of shoreline for non-native Phragmites. They will also survey and treat at least 24 acres of Phragmite stands, including 12 acres on private land, with a goal of controlling 6 acres. The GLRI aims to restore and maintain the Great Lakes ecosystem, and this award supports those efforts by addressing an invasive species threatening the region.
