The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will receive $219,507 from the Environmental Protection Agency under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative program to develop a restoration plan for the 115.3-acre Yanty Marsh coastal wetland on Lake Ontario. The design will include plans to create open water channels and potholes through dredging of cattail monocultures to provide fish and wildlife access to spawning and nesting sites while enhancing habitat. The restoration work will benefit least bitterns, pied-billed grebes, and other focal waterbirds identified in the Lake Ontario Lakewide Action and Management Plan. The design will also include invasive species control of Phragmites as well as native wetland vegetation planting. The project is scheduled to be completed by February 2023.
