THIS ACTION APPROVES AN AWARD IN THE AMOUNT OF $91,000 TO BIRMINGHAM ZOO, INC. WHICH WILL ENABLE THEM TO PROVIDE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING TO THE BIRMINGHAM COMMUNITY VIA IT'S ZOOSCHOOL PROGRAM, AS WELL AS OTHER EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES LED BY IT'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STAFF. ZOOSCHOOL IS A HANDS-ON INITIATIVE OFFERED AT NO COST TO PARTICIPATING PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS. THE PROGRAM IS CARRIED OUT OVER 20 WEEKS. EACH WEEK FOR 20 WEEKS PER YEAR, A NEW COHORT OF 40 STUDENTS AND TWO TEACHERS WILL ARRIVE AT THE ZOO TO TAKE PART IN FIVE DAYS OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING THAT ADDRESSES A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES SUCH AS WATER CONSERVATION, RECYCLING, AGRICULTURE, SPECIES ENDANGERMENT AND OTHER RELATED TOPICS.
