This $101,097 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10 under the Environmental Education Grants Program (CFDA 66.951) will fund the Alaska Songbird Institute to implement an environmental education project in Fairbanks, Alaska. The project aims to increase environmental literacy and encourage pro-environmental behaviors by training underserved and disadvantaged middle and high school students to participate in long-term songbird monitoring projects evaluating the effects of climate change. Key activities include building capacity, reducing economic barriers, and developing culturally responsive STEM mentoring and internship programs to create a pathway to STEM degrees and careers. The project will also enable the grantee to provide five sub-awards to local organizations to build their programs and support low-income student participation. Expected outcomes include 90 middle school students providing 2,000 volunteer hours, 20 high school students providing 1,800 volunteer hours, the creation of 1-2 new STEM projects, and 20 high school stewardship projects completed.
