The Department of Housing and Urban Development's Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity awarded the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety, Division on Civil Rights, a $475,076.34 Cooperative Agreement under the Fair Housing Assistance Program (CFDA 14.401) effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026.
The Division on Civil Rights serves as New Jersey's fair housing enforcement agency and processes housing discrimination complaints filed under the Fair Housing Act. The award funds complaint processing, fair housing training including HUD-approved and mandatory training programs, education and outreach, and awareness promotion of fair housing rights. The Division operates from Trenton, New Jersey.
The Fair Housing Assistance Program provides funding to state and local fair housing enforcement agencies that have been certified by HUD as substantially equivalent to federal fair housing law. Cooperative agreements under this program are executed annually on a non-competitive basis. FHAP operates as a reimbursement program; funds are obligated at fiscal year-end after regional monitors review processed complaints for the performance period. The Division maintains housing discrimination complaint files for one year after closure in accordance with program requirements.
