About this award
The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service awarded the State of Utah, Division of Wildlife Resources a formula grant of $145,587 under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605) for the period of July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. This award funds the design, construction, installation, and maintenance of a new breakwater structure at Strawberry Marina in Utah to improve boating safety and access during adverse weather conditions.
The project directly supports recreational fishing access by enhancing launching and retrieval operations at the state's most heavily utilized boat ramp, which accommodates approximately 1.5 million angler hours annually. Prevailing southwestern winds generate waves exceeding 5-6 feet during storms, creating unsafe loading and unloading conditions; the new breakwater will mitigate these hazards for tens of thousands of boaters annually. The State of Utah will contract for breakwater construction and installation through established state purchasing procedures, with oversight provided by U.S. Forest Service and Division of Wildlife Resources staff to ensure project quality and compliance.
Description
The prevailing winds come from the southwest and the breakwater helps minimize the large waves which make loading and unloading watercraft at the boat ramp difficult. A breakwater purchased about 13 years ago has failed and IT has been stored in the BAY just to the west of the marina for about 3 years now. We are proposing to build and install a new one to replace IT. To provide safe launching and retrieval during windy conditions by installing a new breakwater at strawberry marina. A contractor will be hired through the state of utah purchasing procedures to build install and maintain the breakwater. USFS and udwr staff will oversee the construction and maintenance of this installation. The new breakwater will make loading and unloading watercraft at the strawberry marina ramp much easier for the public. With as much as 1.5 million angler hours each year and the strawberry boat ramp being the most heavily used this project will be beneficial for tens of thousands of boaters each year. Waves in the area can exceed 5 to 6 feet during storms and loading a boat can be extremely difficult and unsafe without a good breakwater.
