Formula Grant F25AF02256
- This $162,500 Project Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657) will support recovery activities for 6 federally listed rare freshwater mussel species found in the Tennessee River Basin. The Wildlife Resources Agency of Tennessee (TWRA) and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) will collaborate on propagation, restoration, and reintroduction efforts for these priority mussel species,...
- This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Research Units program award of $261,042.37 to Auburn University will fund a 3-year project to study the toxicity of different life stages of Cahaba River mudsnails to potassium, chloride, and nickel. The project aims to establish a protocol for toxicology testing of contaminants using mudsnails and determine how organism life stage affects the toxicity of these chemicals to three mudsnail species. The resulting data will be summarized in tables and...
- This Federal Formula Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the State Wildlife Grants (CFDA 15.634) program will provide $211,994 to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to conduct research and monitoring on the conservation status and habitat needs of four mussel species of greatest conservation need (SGCN) in the Red River watershed. The project will use standardized survey protocols to update historical occurrence records and...
- The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (Agfc) received a $163,998 project grant award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund program (CFDA 15.615) to support two freshwater mussel conservation projects in Arkansas. The funding will support Agfc's work to propagate and release juvenile mussels of three federally listed freshwater mussel species - the threatened Arkansas fatmucket, endangered Ouachita rock pocketbook, and endangered winged...
- This $206,235 Formula Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Fish and Wildlife Service Region 4 under the State Wildlife Grants (CFDA 15.634) program will fund a study to evaluate the distribution, population status, and habitat requirements for several crayfish species of greatest conservation need in the Pearl River drainage basin in Louisiana. The project will involve sampling multiple streams, temporary waterways, and terrestrial habitats using passive and active survey...
- This $185,724.14 Project Grant award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615) program supports several conservation objectives in Arkansas: Assessing the status and distribution of the Rocky Shiner fish species through occupancy sampling and habitat/diet analysis to inform the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Species Status Assessment. Improving habitat quality and stability for four federally listed mussel species along the...
- The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will receive $123,316 through a Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 under the Candidate Species Conservation program. The University will evaluate several populations of Pyrgulopsis springsnails in Texas to describe any new species based on examination of DNA, shell, and internal anatomical features. The goal is to help prevent the need to federally list candidate or at-risk species by...
- The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $201,905 Project Grant to The University of Southern Mississippi under the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance program (CFDA 15.608). This funding supports efforts to conserve and restore aquatic connectivity in the Southeast U.S. biodiversity hotspot by assessing barriers to aquatic species movement and utilizing genetic tools to prioritize barrier removal. The work enhances an ongoing recovery project for the federally...
- This $200,000 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615) will support the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) in validating ensemble species distribution models (ESDMs) for 52 unionid mussel species in Texas through follow-up field surveys. The proposed study builds upon an existing TPWD-funded project focused on developing ESDMs for these species, but does not include the critical step of...
- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded a $210,000 Project Grant under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657) to the Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee. The funding will support efforts to recover populations of endangered and threatened mussel species in the Duck River through translocation of adult mussels, stocking of lab-propagated mussels, and reconstruction of a mussel propagation facility at Lillards Mill. This comprehensive project will transform...
THE FRESHWATER SNAIL FAMILY PLEUROCERIDAE IS DIVERSE AND MANY SPECIES ARE NARROWLY ENDEMIC DUE TO LOW DISPERSAL AND WHAT ARE THOUGHT TO BE HIGHLY SPECIFIC LOCAL HABITAT REQUIREMENTS. THE PLEUROCERID GENUS LEPTOXIS IS TYPICALLY FOUND IN CLEAN FAST FLOWING SECTIONS OF INTERMEDIATE SIZED STREAMS AND RIVERS AND JUST ONE SPECIES OF THIS GENUS IS KNOWN TO OCCUR WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER LEPTOXIS ARKANSENSIS ARKANSAS MUDALIA. THE ARKANSAS GAME AND FISH COMMISSION HAS IDENTIFIED L. ARKANSENSIS AS A SPECIES OF GREATEST CONSERVATION NEED SGCN IN 2025 2026 GIVEN ITS RESTRICTED RANGE WITHIN THE WHITE RIVER BASIN AND VERY FEW AND WIDELY SEPARATED CONFIRMED LOCAL POPULATIONS. WE PROPOSE TO COMPLETE AGFCS REQUESTED DISTRIBUTIONAL SURVEY IN A SERIES OF FIELD EXCURSIONS TO PRIORITY LOCATIONS BETWEEN FALL 2025 AND FALL 2026 WITH HEAVY EMPHASIS ON SUMMER SAMPLING IN 2026.MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY WILL BE A SUBRECIPIENT OF THIS AWARD.
