About this award

The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service awarded the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) $478,135 under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605) for the period July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. This formula grant provides partial funding to support three district environmental scientists and seasonal field staff responsible for managing, conserving, restoring, and monitoring sport fish resources across ten counties in the Bay Delta Region. The supported personnel function as district fisheries biologists overseeing three geographic districts: North Bay (Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties), Inner South Bay (Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, and Solano Counties), and South Coast (San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz Counties).

The primary deliverables include assessment and management of sport fish resources with special emphasis on native salmonids, monitoring of fisheries and aquatic resources in lakes and streams, and coordination with federal, state, and local governmental agencies and stakeholders. The grant enables CDFW to maintain angler opportunities and satisfaction through sustained fisheries management and enhancement activities across diverse sport fishing habitats in the Bay Delta Region.

Description

The ability to monitor, manage and enhance sport fisheries is essential to maintain angler opportunities and satisfaction. The BAY delta region central coast steelhead trout conservation and enhancement project is part of the california department of fish and wildlifes (cdfw) BDR fisheries management program and is comprised of three environmental scientists that oversee three districts: north BAY (marin, sonoma, napa, and solano counties), inner south BAY (contra costa, alameda, and santa clara counties, and solano counties), and the south coast (SAN francisco, SAN mateo, and santa cruz counties). These environmental scientists are responsible for the management, conservation, restoration, and monitoring of fisheries and aquatic resources within the lakes and streams of their respective districts with special emphasis on native salmonids and function as district fisheries biologists. This grant will provide the funding necessary to partially support three district biologists and seasonal field staff to assess and manage the sport fish resources across ten counties in the BDR. They accomplish this through close coordination and communication with other cdfw programs and various federal, state, and local governmental agencies and interested stakeholders.
