About this award
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) received a $3.53 million Formula Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605) for the period July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. The award supports IDNR's comprehensive fish production and stocking program, which is essential to maintaining Iowa's recreational fishing resources. During the grant period, IDNR will produce and stock 112.8 million fish across 11 different species, ranging from hatchlings (0.5 inches) to catchable-sized fish (12 inches), to sustain fishing opportunities across Iowa's 70,000 miles of streams and 315,000 acres of lakes.
The stocking program directly supports Iowa's $330 million annual fishing economy by maintaining viable populations of walleye, muskellunge, channel catfish, hybrid striped bass, blue catfish, and trout species across managed waters. Without the IDNR's fish production and stocking initiatives, many of Iowa's premier fisheries—including walleye lakes and newly established trout fishing opportunities in northeast Iowa and 18 community ponds—would be unavailable to the state's approximately 473,000 annual anglers. This Formula Grant funding represents a critical investment in fish population management and public recreational fishing access.
Description
Iowa anglers annually fish an average of 13 days each and catch more than 40 million fish. This has a substantial economic impact in 2011, some 473,000 resident and nonresident anglers spent almost $330 million dollars in iowa on fishing-related expenditures. The iowa department of natural resources (DNR) fisheries bureau manages over 70,000 miles of streams and 315,000 acres of lakes and border rivers for fishing. These waters are very productive, but are greatly impacted by human activities. Stocking is necessary to maintain fishable populations in many of these systems so the DNR annually produces as many as fifteen different species of fish. If IT weren t for iowa DNR fish production and stocking programs, iowas walleye lakes would offer little or no walleye fishing. Stocking is responsible for the muskellunge hooked each year in 15 targeted lakes. Channel catfish would be nonexistent in iowa lakes. In addition, hybrid striped bass and blue catfish fisheries would not exist. Stocking has helped expand naturally reproducing brook and brown trout populations. Stocking has created new trout fishing opportunities in streams in northeast iowa and in 18 community (urban) ponds across iowa. In addition, stocking has been used to repopulate dozens of lakes in which all the previous fish were deemed undesirable and removed or perished due to winterkill. To accomplish its fish production and distribution goals, the iowa DNR fisheries bureau intends to produce and stock 11 different species of fish totaling 112.8 million fish ranging from hatchlings ( 0.5 ) to catchables (12 ) from july 1, 2025 to june 30, 2026.
