About this award
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 7 awarded $1,256,984.50 to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605) for the period of July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. This Formula Grant funds five integrated projects focused on angler recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) activities and outreach across Alaska. The award supports the operation and maintenance of two visitor centers—the Ship Creek Fisheries Center in Anchorage and the Tanana Valley Fisheries Center in Fairbanks—along with the development of a comprehensive R3 plan.
The funded projects deliver educational and informational services through multiple regional initiatives. ADFG will operate information and education support staff at seven area offices in Southeast Alaska to conduct public events and provide fisheries information. In Southcentral Alaska, three aquatic education staff will provide classroom visits, teacher training, and support aquatic awareness at trade shows and events. Additional support staff in Southcentral and Fairbanks offices will assist with fishing regulation explanations, license sales, tackle recommendations, and specialized programs including the Trout in Classroom initiative, community events, social media engagement, and a rod loaner program. These coordinated services are designed to expand public awareness of and participation in Alaska's sport fishing opportunities.
