About this award
The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service Region 4 awarded a $880,000 Formula Grant on April 1, 2025 to the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) under the Sport Fish Restoration program (CFDA 15.605). The grant will fund KDFWR's efforts to monitor, manage, and conduct research on Kentucky's diverse aquatic resources, including large reservoirs, smaller impoundments, urban fisheries, ponds, streams, and rivers. The research assessments will guide future management decisions, hatchery propagation protocols, and stocking efforts to enhance recreational fishing opportunities and perpetuate healthy fish populations throughout the state. Key activities include habitat restoration, species population monitoring, and public education programs to benefit Kentucky's estimated 551,000 anglers who fish for an estimated 10.1 million angler days annually.
Description
These resources include large multipurpose flood control reservoirs, smaller impoundments, urban fisheries, public and private ponds, streams, and rivers. These fisheries are highly pressured with roughly 551,000 anglers fishing in kentucky for an estimated 10.1 million angler days. To meet the significant demand for quality fisheries, the kentucky department of fish and wildlife resources (kdfwr) must monitor, manage, and conduct research throughout kentuckys fisheries to provide for optimal sustainability. Additionally, the kdfwr must increase and protect habitat necessary for spawning, nursery, and foraging to perpetuate healthy fish populations. The research assessments will guide future management decisions, future hatchery propagation protocols, and stocking efforts in the diverse waterbodies throughout the state. Research conducted will serve to improve future habitat initiatives and evaluate current management strategies for the betterment of fish populations. Ultimately, kentuckys anglers will benefit through enhanced recreational fishing opportunities with the potential for increased catch and harvest.
