Description

The aim the nestingbeach monitoring program historically was to monitor the most active beaches in OFU-olosega to gauge relativenesting effort in the territory. This year we plan to expand beach monitoring to include tutuila and tauislands. This includes conducting an assessment of beaches on tutuila and manua that were identified as nestingbeaches in 2006 to determine what changes to nesting habitat quality have occurred (20 beaches). The 24-hourstranding response on tutuila will focus on threat mitigation through collection of stranded turtles andsubsequent necropsy to evaluate cause of death in order to mitigate threats the population. In-water monitoringthrough photo identification will provide dmwr the possibility to track changes in the population of reefresident turtles in aid of development of critical turtle habitat.
