About this award

The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $172,000 Formula Grant under the State Wildlife Grants (CFDA 15.634) program to the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), doing business as Hilo, to continue developing the first land-based restoration facility on the east coast of Puerto Rico. The goal of this 1-year project is to successfully rear and restore the long-spined sea urchin (Diadema antillarum) and important framework-building corals to the coral reefs in the Northeast Marine Corridor of Puerto Rico. This is intended to increase coral reef resiliency by decreasing algal cover, especially Ramicrusta spp., and increasing coral cover and diversity. The funding will support the second segment of this nursery development effort, building on previous work to establish this critical land-based restoration facility.
