Description

The county of nevada respectfully requests S106,037 to enhance public accessibility, improve infrastructure, and foster leave-no-trace principles at one of the few public access points along the truckee river in nevada county. This project is closely aligned with the county of nevada board of supervisor s objectives for recreation and climate resilience which will improve access for all residents and visitors of truckee, create additional recreational opportunities, and promotes environmental stewardship. As such, IT seeks to broaden public access to boating opportunities through the following goals: 1.improving access for all: improving access for boaters and recreationalists in nevada county is a priority. The truckee river flows 120 miles from lake tahoe, CA to pyramid lake, NV and offers recreational opportunities for paddlecraft, swimmers, and other visitors during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. The glenshire drive bridge intersects the truckee river and provides access to one of the few paddlecraft put-in and take-out points in nevada COUNTY2 and offers access to the nearby legacy trail. The parking area, which parallels the glenshire DR. Bridge resides on public land owned and managed by the U.S. Forest service. If funded, this project will improve river access to paddlecraft and other visitors by rectifying large and hazardous potholes and using decomposed granite to enhance the surface of the parking area and access roadway. Additionally, improvements will include americans with disabilities act (ADA accessible parking and picnic access.2.creating additional recreation opportunities: creating additional recreation opportunities in this area is necessary for enhancing and increasing public enjoyment and promoting river access for paddlecraft. Currently the only shade available in this area is underneath the nearby bridge and is not inclusive for all visitors. Incorporating a shade structure and ADA compliant parking spaces and picnic area will allow greater multi-use access to all visitors utilizing this space. 3.promoting river stewardship: constructing a kiosk, enhancing outreach, and improving signage are necessary for advocating river and environmental stewardship. The kiosk will serve as an informational hub, offering crucial guidance on river safety, invasive species management, and leave-no-trace principles. Given the absence of waste or trash receptacles at the river access point, messaging will encourage visitors to pack IT in, pack IT out both at the recreation site, as well as on the visitor truckee tahoe and go nevada county destination marketing web sites. Additionally, considering the recent discovery of new zealand mudsnails in lake TAHOE3, IT is imperative to educate visitors and operators of paddlecraft about invasive species and good practices when launching and recovering in new waters. Furthermore, with varying flow rates from upstream lake tahoe, providing river safety information and establishing a multi-use kiosk with the potential for loaner life jackets will be instrumental in enhancing public safety and reducing the risk of injuries and drownings.
