About this award

This $157,910.44 Formula Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service under the State Wildlife Grants (CFDA 15.634) program will be sub-awarded to Oklahoma State University. The grant will fund a study to investigate the occurrence and habitat use of the Rocky Shiner (Notropis suttkusi), a species of conservation concern that is under consideration for federal threatened or endangered species listing. The study will involve species distribution modeling to determine potential Rocky Shiner habitat, followed by range-wide sampling to verify actual habitat use across Oklahoma. The project will produce a habitat suitability map and an updated georeferenced database of Rocky Shiner occurrences to inform state and federal agencies on the current status of this species within Oklahoma. The award period runs from January 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027.

Description

The rocky shiner notropis suttkusi is a species of conservation concern and under consideration for listing as threatened or endangered by the US fish and wildlife service. Recent surveys have documented occurrences of rocky shiner in the ouachita mountains but other portions of its range have not been investigated for over a decade. This study plans to investigate the occurrence of rocky shiner throughout its range in oklahoma by conducting species distribution models to determine potential habitat followed by range wide sampling to determine actual habitat use. This study will provide a habitat suitability map for rocky shiner in oklahoma and an updated field verified georeferenced database of occurrences along with a final report. Such products will help inform state and federal agencies regarding the present status of rocky shiner in oklahoma.
