Description
This project provides california department of fish and wildlife (cdfw) sport fish management and population improvement information through surveys targeting the EEL river s resident steelhead trout habitat, steelhead population abundance, spatial structure and diversity. This monitoring work is situated in the mountainous interior region of the EEL river and tributaries. Notable for a lack of urbanization and extensive agricultural cultivation, this area includes several designated wilderness areas, and wild and scenic river reaches. This rugged and remote landscape provides unique sportfishing opportunity through a diversity of landscapes providing both adventure and solitude. Additionally, the absence of extensive urbanization and intensive agriculture offers increased opportunity to restore and enhance ecosystem processes critical to supporting robust salmon and steelhead populations. This project supports cdfw sport fishery management needs including EEL river catch and release anadromous steelhead trout fisheries and resident rainbow trout fishery. The in-river bank and drift boat steelhead trout fisheries, and the areas lake and stream trout fisheries, attract numerous anglers and support visitor, tackle, and guide service industries.
