Description
California department of fish and wildlife (cdfw) project staff collect and manage fishery-dependent marine sportfishing data that is essential for effective fisheries management with the intent to maximize fishingopportunities while protecting the fishery resources. This information is necessary to meet the mandates of themarine life management act, the magnuson-stevens fishery conservation and management act and the modernizing marine recreational fisheries act. Activities include conducting marine recreational fisheries surveys, entering, and managing survey data, management of commercial passenger fishing vessel (cpfv- also known as party or charter boats) logbooks, and providing technical support of survey designs for sport fishery studies and data analysis. Work conducted under this project aligns with cdfws seven strategic initiatives, and the data and estimates are vital components of the marine life management act master plan.marine fish provide sport fishing opportunities in three interlinked ecosystems (bays and estuaries, near shoreocean waters, and offshore waters) along californias 1,100-mile coastline. The fish are diverse, extensive, andcomprise one of the nations largest and most heavily used fishery resources with anglers taking APPROXIMATELY3.4 million fishing trips annually. Californias marine environment supports 16 major recreational fisheries:california and pacific halibut, california scorpionfish, chinook salmon, flatfishes (flounders and soles),lingcod, pacific mackerel, rockfish, sharks, striped bass, surfperches, true sea basses (kelp bass, barred andspotted sand basses), tunas and pelagic species, white seabass, white sturgeon, yellowtail (jack) and numerousniche fisheries (e.g., grunion, pacific herring, night smelt). In 2020 marine recreational anglers spent $718.1MILLION on fishing activities, adding a total of $301 million of economic value and supported approximately 5,000FULL and part-time jobs in california (nmfs 2023). Management processes designed to help sustain long-term use ofmarine fish of sport interest have, at their core, data gathering and analytical components. The fishery dependentdata and estimates provided by this project are essential for tracking harvest in-season, developingharvest limits, conducting stock assessments, and evaluating the effectiveness of fishery management policies. Ifcrfs data and estimates are not provided, fisheries management decisions will need to be based on proxies ofeffort and catch resulting in conservative management strategies that reduce or eliminate recreational fishingopportunities. The reference section provides a partial list of stock assessments and management plans that use fishery dependent information obtained through this grant.
