Description

This project aims to contribute to conservation of the tricolored blackbird (agelaius tricolor) in southern california (1) by identifying and filling gaps in current surveys in the region, especially of non-conserved lands, (2) through focused studies at two key colonies, rancho jamul ecological reserve (rjer) and SAN jacinto wildlife area (sjwa), and (3) via public outreach. Surveys will reveal new colonies and sites with restoration potential. Focused study at two of the few known remaining colonies will quantify large-scale movements and foraging requirements, and identify threats. Results will inform the tricolored blackbird conservation strategy specific to this region. Outreach to the public and to specific landowners will aim to locate additional colonies, improve awareness, and increase protection on both conserved and non-conserved lands. SAN diego natural history museum (sdnhm) staff will lead the surveys and focused studies over two nesting seasons, as well as the outreach. Identification of additional sites is critical because the colonies confirmed active by recent surveys are so few as to be probably insufficient to sustain the southern california breeding population over the long term. Cdfw staff will coordinate and collaborate with the sdnhm to work in both the south coast and inland desert regions and will provide support through project and contract management, assistance in field surveys, and GIS support. The project targets high-priority goals of the tricolored blackbird conservation plan (tbwg 2007) and is consistent with SOC priorities.
