The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MODNR) has been awarded a $5,123,494 federal formula grant under the Department of the Interior's Energy Community Revitalization Program (CFDA 15.018) to plug, remediate, and reclaim approximately 238 orphaned oil and gas wells on state and private lands in Missouri. The grant funding will also be used to remediate and restore approximately 400 acres of land previously degraded by the adverse effects of oil and gas production and drilling. Key activities to be performed include plugging wells, remediating soil and habitat, decommissioning associated infrastructure, identifying and characterizing additional undocumented orphaned wells, ranking wells based on public health and environmental impacts, and measuring methane emissions and water contamination. The grant aims to decrease methane emissions, enhance public health and safety protections, and restore degraded natural resources, with a focus on addressing disproportionate impacts on underserved communities. The grant period is from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027.
