About this award

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles $764,815.26 on October 1, 2025, under the National Priority Safety Programs (CFDA 20.616), Section 405(g) Nonmotorized Safety Grant program to support initiatives that decrease nonmotorized road user fatalities involving motor vehicles in transit on trafficways.

Virginia qualified for 405(g) funding because the state's annual combined nonmotorized road user fatalities exceeded 15 percent of the state's total annual crash fatalities based on the most recent calendar year for which final FARS data were available as determined by NHTSA. The funds are apportioned using a statutory formula and support programs and countermeasure strategies detailed in an approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes. The Virginia DMV's Grants Management Division administers the award.

The period of performance runs from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029, with place of performance in Richmond, Virginia. The award is a formula grant under which federal reimbursement occurs on claims submitted in vouchers covering incurred costs. The recipient must retain project records for three years following submission of a final expenditure report, all project contract documents, financial records, and supporting documents pending resolution of audit findings.
