About this award

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Department of Public Safety State Utah (Ucan) $287,371.09 under the Section 405(g) Nonmotorized Safety Grant on October 1, 2025, to support programs decreasing nonmotorized road user fatalities involving motor vehicles on trafficways. Performance runs through September 30, 2029, with work performed in Taylorsville, Utah.

The award funds countermeasure strategies and projects developed under an approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application, targeting reductions in crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving pedestrians and cyclists. Ucan qualifies for this formula grant under the National Priority Safety Programs (CFDA 20.616) because Utah's annual combined nonmotorized road user fatalities exceed 15 percent of the state's total annual crash fatalities based on the most recent available FARS data, as determined by NHTSA. Funds are apportioned using the statutory formula and require alignment with problem identification, public participation and engagement, and performance measures outlined in the approved applications. Ucan serves as the State Highway Safety Office administering the award and distributing sub-awards to local jurisdictions and partner organizations implementing nonmotorized safety initiatives across Utah counties and municipalities.
