About this award
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the California Office of Traffic Safety $3,277,893.82 on October 1, 2025, under the Section 405(g) Nonmotorized Safety Grant program (CFDA 20.616, National Priority Safety Programs) to support programs that decrease nonmotorized road user fatalities involving motor vehicles in transit on trafficways.
California qualifies for 405(g) funding because the state's annual combined nonmotorized road user fatalities exceed 15 percent of the state's total annual crash fatalities, as determined by NHTSA using the most recent calendar year for which final FARS data are available. Funds are apportioned using the statutory apportionment formula and are provided to the state highway safety office based on an approved triennial highway safety plan and annual grant application that detail problem identification, public participation and engagement, performance measures, and countermeasure strategies to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities from motor vehicle crashes.
The award funds the California Office of Traffic Safety, the state's designated highway safety office, which serves as the primary recipient and administrator of NHTSA highway safety formula grants for the state. The period of performance runs from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029. Work is performed in Elk Grove, California.
