About this award

The Department of Transportation Maryland Office of Planning and Finance Division received a $136,382.37 Formula Grant award on October 1, 2023 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the National Priority Safety Programs (CFDA 20.616). This grant funding supports enforcement of the state's laws applicable to pedestrian and bicycle safety through law enforcement training, enforcement mobilizations and campaigns, and public education and awareness programs. The grant provides funding to the Maryland Highway Safety Office to address the state's high rate of nonmotorized road user fatalities, which exceed 15 percent of total crash fatalities.

The Department of Transportation also issued a $1,000,000 sub-award on July 31, 2023 to the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, Inc. (BMC), a regional planning nonprofit, to implement a "Look Alive" pedestrian and bicycle safety campaign in the Baltimore metropolitan area. This campaign will focus on education, outreach, and enforcement activities to improve safety for nonmotorized road users.
