About this award
The Federal Highway Administration awarded the Hawaii Department of Transportation $3,891,196.47 on August 25, 2026, under the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CFDA 20.268) to construct North King Street bikeway improvements in Honolulu County.
The project delivers new concrete median islands and buffers, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, vehicle detector loops, bike and pedestrian counters, flexible delineators, and signing and striping on North King Street. Work is performed in Hawaii with an ultimate completion date of November 16, 2029. The CMAQ program funds transportation projects and programs that reduce congestion and improve air quality in nonattainment and maintenance areas for ozone, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. Each state's apportionment is calculated by formula under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act; Hawaii must dedicate 25 percent of its CMAQ apportionment attributable to PM2.5-weighted population to projects targeting particulate matter reductions in nonattainment and maintenance areas, with priority to disadvantaged communities or low-income populations living in or adjacent to such areas to the extent practicable. Funds remain available for obligation for three years after the end of the fiscal year for which they are authorized.
