About this award
The City of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Forensic Science Division was awarded a $1,764,997 Formula Grant from the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance under the DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction Program (CFDA 16.741). The funding will be used to increase the efficiency and capacity of the LAPD's Serology/DNA Unit by purchasing supplies, validating new high-throughput instrumentation, implementing sample tracking software, expanding personnel hours for forensic DNA analysis, and providing required staff training. The goal is to process more DNA samples in less time, enabling the LAPD to reduce its DNA evidence backlog and enter more profiles into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) to assist criminal investigations. The 2-year grant performance period runs from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2025.
Description
Lapd FSD proposes to increase the efficiency and capacity of the analysis of evidence in the serology/DNA unit (SDU) using the FY 2023 DNA capacity enhancement and backlog reduction program. Project activities to increase sample processing include purchasing of supplies, validating a new high-throughput instrument and implementing new software to track sample analysis and reporting. To increase capacity and reduce case backlog, the program will increase personnel hours for forensic DNA sample analysis and train additional staff. During the grant performance period, the lapd SDU expects to process more codis eligible samples in less time, allowing staff sufficient time to train personnel and validate new technologies. In addition, grant funding will allow staff to receive training to meet required continuing education requirements of accreditation.
