About this award
The County of Sacramento's Laboratory of Forensic Services will use a $469,050 formula grant award from the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance to dedicate two DNA analysts to analyze 160 backlogged violent crime biology/DNA cases from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2024. The analysts will profile forensic evidence that may contain DNA from designated crime cases, upload eligible profiles to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and prepare laboratory reports to help reduce the DNA case backlog. While not all cases are expected to yield a CODIS-eligible profile, the laboratory's goal is to obtain at least 50 eligible profiles for upload based on past performance under similar grants. This funding supports the DNA Backlog Reduction Program's goals of increasing laboratory capacity and reducing the number of forensic samples awaiting analysis.
