The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded a $524,774 Cooperative Agreement under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to The Johns Hopkins University to validate the Faceted Opioid Research Craving Assessment for Substance Use Treatment (FORCAST) as a patient-reported outcome drug development tool. The primary objectives of this 2-year project are to: 1) test and validate the factor structure of the FORCAST opioid craving assessment, 2) assess measurement invariance of the FORCAST across demographic groups, and 3) evaluate the internal consistency of the measure. To accomplish these aims, the research team will leverage existing collaborations with substance use disorder treatment centers nationwide and local clinics in Baltimore, MD to gather FORCAST data from 1,300 individuals in treatment for opioid use disorder. This work will advance the FORCAST tool through the FDA's Drug Development Tool Qualification Program to address the critical need for best practices in assessing and monitoring opioid craving, a neglected treatment endpoint.
