This $157,286 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements program (CFDA 15.560) supports a comprehensive project by the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security to inform current and future initiatives at the Salton Sea.

Key objectives of the project include: 1) Identifying and analyzing relevant research on dust emissions, air quality, and related public health outcomes in the Salton Sea region, as well as significant data and research gaps, resulting in a synthesis report; 2) Identifying best management practices and innovative solutions to address these air quality challenges; and 3) Communicating the current state of the science and knowledge gaps to policymakers, the California Salton Sea Management Program, and other stakeholders. Project activities involve conducting literature reviews, inventorying air quality contaminants and sources, developing a Salton Sea Air Quality Assessment, and convening an air quality public health workshop.

Description

The objectives are: to identify and analyze relevant research on dust emissions, air quality, and related public health outcomes in the salton sea region and identify significant data and research gaps, resulting in a synthesis report identify best management practices and innovative solutions to address these air quality challenges and communicate the current state of the science and knowledge gaps in these areas to policymakers, state of californias salton sea management program (ssmp), and stakeholders.although research on lakebed exposure, dust emissions, and the public health impacts of additional playa exposure at the salton sea (sea) has increased in recent years, this growing knowledge base has not been synthesized and analyzed in an accessible, scientific format for stakeholders and decision-makers. Misstatements and mischaracterizations of ongoing research, create false expectations and could lead to poorly planned projects and waste state and federal funding. This proposed project will provide critical capacity to synthesize, assess, and communicate scientific information for stakeholders and decision-makers that will improve awareness and knowledge of key information needed for current and future project planning and implementation at the sea to ensure that management objectives can be met.activities to be performed include: task 1. Literature review and analysistask 2. Inventory of air quality contaminants and sourcestask 3. Draft salton sea air quality assessmenttask 4. Finalize and distribute the salton sea air quality assessmenttask 5. Communicate the current state of the sciencetask 6. Convene an air quality public health workshop and distribute findings
