Description

Programming supports a comprehensive network of cooperative study units to facilitate cooperative research, technical assistance, education, and training to inform science-based management of the national park system. The study units facilitate multi-disciplinary science and integrated information products across multiple geographic regions of the national park system. This project will test a vaccine to protect little brown bats (myotis lucifugus mylu) in glacier national park from white-nose syndrome, a deadly fungal disease. Researchers will tag and monitor bats at historic building roosts and artificial BAT boxes to assess survival and vaccine effectiveness. The study also compares BAT box designs to identify suitable alternatives as historic roosts are renovated. Data on temperature, humidity, and BAT behavior will guide future habitat mitigation and conservation strategies. Beneficiaries include state and local governments, federally recognized indian tribal governments, public private nonprofit organizations, nonprofit institutions of higher education, and the general public).
