Description

The U.S. Fish and wildlife service has announced that IT will review the status of the pinyon JAY to determine if IT should be listed under the endangered species act, has the potential to greatly impact the operations of the national park service and other federal agencies. Since 1967, pinyon JAY populations have declined by an estimated 84%. The species has been relatively little studied, and broad, systematic surveys have never been undertaken on national park service lands. Using both in-person visits and autonomous recording units, we will survey for the presence of pinyon jays in 25 parks in new mexico, arizona, colorado, and utah. These surveys will enable the park service to prepare for possible listing, avoid actions that may be detrimental to the species, and to plan management and protection actions for this species and others that have overlapping habitat.
