THE PUBLIC PURPOSE OF THE AGREEMENT IS TO ENABLE THE NPS TO BETTER FULFILL ITS MISSION AND PURPOSE AS A STEWARD OF CERTAIN PUBLIC LANDS AND WATERS THAT ARE SIGNIFICANT TO TRADITIONALLY ASSOCIATED GROUPS AND THE ANCESTRAL HOMELANDS OF TRIBES THAT PREDATE THE NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM. AS CLIMATE CHANGE CREATES NEW AND EXACERBATED IMPACTS TO THESE PLACES, DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR STEWARDSHIP MUST BE MADE IN PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION WITH TRIBES AND ASSOCIATED COMMUNITIES WHO HAVE LIVED AND CARED FOR THEM FOR GENERATIONS. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A MODEL THAT CAN PROVIDE A WAY TO FACILITATE SUCH COLLABORATION THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH AND BUILDS UPON OTHER GUIDANCE AND POLICIES RELATED TO CO-STEWARDSHIP WITH TRIBES AND THE INCLUSION OF INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE.
