Description

Tree island response to hydrologic and fire regime changes in northeast shark river slough everglades national park this project is to determine how fire flooding and managements actions have affected tree islands within shark river slough everglades national park between 1940 and present and develop species specific hydrologic tolerances for woody species found in tree islands bayheads and hardwood hammocks. State and federal scientist and managers as well as partners and the public will have a better understanding of how hydrologic changes resulting from restoration efforts will impact tree island biological resources within shark river slough everglades national park. This information will allow for a better understanding of how resilient tree islands are to flooding and how species compositions and biological functions are likely to change because of restoration efforts. The results of this project will increase the publics understanding of everglades restoration and how IT benefits plant and animal communities. In addition this information will improve our understanding of biological processes within tree islands and inform managers and the public on how to best manage hydrologic conditions throughout the greater everglades to ensure that tree islands remain resilient and continue to provide quality habitat for the plants and animals that inhabit this unique ecosystem.
