This collaborative research initiative will produce tree-ring based drought reconstructions extending back 2,000 years to assess historical and future Colorado River Basin drought conditions. The primary deliverables include...
- This $425,200 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) supports research at Arizona State University from July 2022 through June 2024 towards understanding responses to climate change and invasion vulnerability in drylands of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The research will combine geospatial techniques such as species distribution modeling with a trait-based methodology to assess amphibian species' vulnerability to...
- Grant Award Summary The University of Arizona received a $303,942 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2028. This collaborative research initiative will produce extended tree-ring reconstructions of drought conditions in the Colorado River Basin spanning the past 2,000 years, with particular focus on characterizing a potentially severe...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, valued at $285,000 and issued by the National Park Service under the CFDA 15.954 Conservation, Protection, Outreach, and Education program, funds the Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative to assess, synthesize, and forecast stream gage discharge data relevant to national parks in the western United States. The project objectives include: 1) conducting analysis and synthesis of historic discharge data on free-flowing stream gages relevant to National Park...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) provides $145,400 to Colorado State University (CSU) to conduct research and monitoring activities related to riparian ecosystem restoration in the western United States. The key objectives include: Participating in the science team and working groups for Minute 323 of the U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty, which involves delivering water for active restoration of riparian sites in...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Northern Arizona University received $457,275 from the National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) beginning September 1, 2025, and concluding August 31, 2028. The project delivers paleoecological research products and scientific datasets assessing how major North American biome-scale ecotones responded to environmental changes since the Last Ice Age. Using fossil pollen datasets from...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $542,834 Project Grant to the University of Arizona under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research reconstructing Southern Rocky Mountains warm season temperatures over the past 2,000 years. The research aims to develop a temperature reconstruction using bristlecone pine from the Rio Grande headwaters region, augmented with updated hydroclimate reconstructions, to evaluate long-term regional temperature and hydroclimate...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program ($937,251) funds research into scaling climate connectivity and communities in streams. Led by Pennsylvania State University from March 2022 through December 2023, the grant supports a three-year field study across 10 regions in the southern, central, and western U.S. Researchers will collect streamflow and biological data to investigate differences between intermittent and perennial streams. The University...
INSTITUTION: UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONAFUNDING AGENCY: NATIONAL PARK SERVICE PROPOSED PROJECT TITLE: SYNTHESIZING EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON U.S. SOUTHWESTERN RIVERS: INSIGHTS FROM MACROINVERTEBRATE DATA ACROSS SIX NATIONAL PARKSPROJECT LOCATION: SODN AND SOPN (BEOL, GICL, MOCA, PECO, TUMA, TUZI)PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: DR. MICHAEL BOGAN PROPOSED BUDGET: $133,439PROPOSED START AND END DATES: 1 AUGUST 2024 TO 1 AUGUST 2027A.PERFORMANCE GOALS THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO DEVELOP A DETAILED SYNTHESIS OF MACROINVERTEBRATES OF PERENNIAL RIVER SYSTEMS OF SONORAN DESERT (SODN) AND SOUTHERN PLAINS (SOPN) NATIONAL PARKS. THE PROJECT WILL LEVERAGE AN EXISTING MACROINVERTEBRATE DATASET SPANNING THE YEARS 2012 TO 2023, GRIDDED CLIMATE DATASETS, AND DISCHARGE TIME SERIES AVAILABLE FROM THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY GAGING STATION NETWORK. THE WORK DESCRIBED ALIGNS WITH NPS DIRECTOR S ORDER 77-1 AND 77-2 TO PROTECT WETLAND HABITAT AND ITS ASSOCIATED BIODIVERSITY AND ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT. THIS WORK WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED VIA THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS: (1) PARK AND REGIONAL SUMMARIES OF DISCHARGE AND CLIMATE DRIVERS (E.G., AIR TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION) THAT PROVIDE A CONTEXTUAL BASIS FOR OUR UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE INFLUENCES (2) A SUMMARY OF THE STATUS AND TRENDS OF MACROINVERTEBRATES BASED ON STATE-LEVEL INDICES OF BIOLOGICAL INTEGRITY, AND (3) A SYNTHETIC ANALYSIS OF TOTAL MACROINVERTEBRATE RICHNESS, RICHNESS OF TOLERANT TAXA, AND RICHNESS OF EPTS. THIS ANALYSIS AND RESULTING REPORTS WILL PROVIDE DATA FOR PARK PLANNING, A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF HAZARDOUS FLOODING ON RIVER BIODIVERSITY, VISITOR SAFETY, RECREATION ACCESS, AND INTERPRETATION.
