Description

The endangered northern long-eared BAT (myotis septentrionalis myse) has been heavily impacted by white-nose syndrome (WNS) with population declines of more than 95%. Rock creek park (rocr) and prince william forest park (prwi) are the only NCR parks with recent evidence of successfully reproducing myse colonies. This project will document whether myse are still reproductively active and viable with functioning social groups using networked day-roosts in small discrete areas or showing evidence of decline. Expanded spring and fall acoustic surveys will provide insights into whether myse are overwintering on or near prwi and rocr or are using traditional hibernacula to the west in the ridge and valley or east to a new location in the coastal forests. From netted myse, genetic and stable-isotope sampling will refine population structure assessments and connectedness to the potential mid-atlantic coastal population. Beneficiaries include the scientific community, the students working on the project, and the general public.
