About this award

The National Park Service (NPS) Midwest Region has awarded a $635,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Mississippi Park Connection, a non-profit organization, under the NPS Natural Resource Stewardship program (CFDA 15.944). The project, which will run from August 4, 2023 to April 30, 2028, will restore up to 2,500 acres of forested floodplain in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area in Minnesota.

The Mississippi Park Connection will provide natural resource conservation, habitat restoration, recreation access, volunteer engagement, youth programs, and environmental education related to the Mississippi River through this federal grant. Specific services include invasive species removal, reforestation, trail maintenance, volunteer coordination, paddle sports equipment sharing, work-based learning opportunities for youth, and planning for future environmental education facilities. This work aims to sustain biological communities, improve ecosystem resilience, and provide public access and educational opportunities within the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area national park site.

Description

The natural resource stewardship program is the principle means through which the national park service (NPS) evaluates and improves the health of watersheds, landscapes, and marine and coastal resources, sustains biological communities on the lands and waters in parks, and actively endeavors to improve the resiliency of these natural resources and adapt them to the effects of climate change. To carry out and further this stewardship responsibility, NPS implements programs that encompass a broad range of research, operational, and educational activities by utilizing park personnel and contractor support or cooperative agreements. Through the course of a multi-year project, this project will restore up to 2500 acres of forested floodplain in the metro twin cities area in minnesota. Beneficiaries include the general public.
