Description

Activities
A low-cost genotyping tool for polyploids will be created based on the genetics of several existing tetraploid populations in the mid-atlantic and gulf of mexico to facilitate cost-effective, genetic-driven breeding of polyploid eastern oysters in each region. Best practices for analyzing DNA sequence data from the tool will be developed so that efficient, scalable pipelines for processing polyploid sequences for selective breeding efforts will be made widely available. The value of the new tools and data analysis methods will be demonstrated through genetic analysis of polyploids undergoing grow-out trials on commercial and research oyster farms, with the goal of identifying a genetic basis for unexplained mortality events of commercial triploids.
Expected outcomes
Short term benefits from the project include new technology for genetic improvement of commercial oysters, improved protocols for genomics-based oyster breeding, and clear direction for improving survival of triploid oysters. Long-term benefits include increased annual production and employment in the US oyster aquaculture industry from a major increase in the rate of genetic improvement for critical traits (e.g. survival, growth, and tolerance to environmental stressors), as well as through applying the developed technology to other polyploid species, including other mollusc species such as pacific oysters.
Intended beneficiaries
The deliverables are expected to benefit the farmers, hatchery operators, breeders, and research institutions involved in the US oyster aquaculture industry. Application of the tools is expected to increase survival and improve performance of commercially farmed oysters, which will benefit farmers, hatchery operators, and breeders, and availability of the tools will enable higher-level genetic studies on polyploid oysters and related species.
Subrecipient activities
Subrecipient activities (vims and auburn) include sampling of existing polyploid genetic material for genetic analysis, as well as running field tests for investigation of triploid mortality. All institutions (tamucc, vims, auburn) will be involved in outreach and dissemination of results.
