Cooperative Agreement NA23OAR0170507
- The University of California San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography was awarded a $875,891 Cooperative Agreement from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Ocean Acidification Program (CFDA 11.017). The 3-year project focuses on developing and testing a low-cost, low-energy system to capture atmospheric CO2 and convert it into alkaline salts for ocean alkalinity enhancement. The research team will construct a pilot system,...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $158,324 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Hawaii (UH) to characterize the effects of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) on coral reef ecosystems and atmospheric carbon dioxide. The research project aims to: 1) quantify the dissolution rate of olivine minerals used in OAE and their impact on reef communities and carbon dioxide levels; 2) develop biogeochemical models to predict...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Ocean Acidification Program (CFDA 11.017), provides $100,370.00 to researchers at the University of Texas at Austin led by Dr. Sharon Herzka. The purpose is to survey microscopic ocean animals, or zooplankton, to understand the impact of ocean acidification on their populations during the GOMECC cruise in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer of 2025. The team will capture zooplankton...
- This federal Cooperative Agreement award by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Ocean Acidification Program (CFDA 11.017) provides $147,843 to a research team led by scientists at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and North Carolina State University. The project aims to study a range of phytoplankton, harmful algae, and biological processes during the GOMECC cruise in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer of 2025. Key activities include collecting water...
- This two-year, $400,000 project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce supports research under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program. The University of Hawaii at Manoa will examine the capacity of bio-enhancing concrete materials, textures, and shapes to enhance native coral habitat and provide coastal infrastructure protection in Hawaii. Pilot applications of eco-concrete, composite pumice, and carbon-infused concrete on small...
- This $716,649 National Science Foundation Project Grant through the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research at the University of Rhode Island to quantify changes in ocean acidification (OA) in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island resulting from reductions in nutrient inputs. Over the past few decades, management agencies have reduced nutrient loads to coastal waters by over one-third to improve water quality, which could lower OA levels even though that was not the initial goal....
- This $331,500 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences' project to assess the potential of artificial upwelling to mitigate coral bleaching during heat waves. The project will substantially improve understanding of how artificial upwelling could be used to mitigate coral bleaching during periods of thermal stress by investigating the effects of different upwelling scenarios (varying depths and pulse...
- This federal Project Grant award of $1,049,821 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Ocean Acidification Program (CFDA 11.017) aims to develop and evaluate ocean acidification-relevant data products for the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). The key objectives are to: Develop two sets of ocean acidification products for the CCLME based on data assimilation procedures and statistical estimates of carbonate variables for the periods 2011-2026 and...
- This five-year Project Grant, awarded July 1, 2025, through the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) and jointly supported by the Division of Ocean Sciences and Division of Mathematical Sciences, provides $899,997 to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to develop an integrative theoretical framework for modeling coral adaptive potential. The primary deliverable is a series of mathematical models spanning multiple scales—from within-host symbiont communities to...
- This $200,000 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support research to investigate the impact of changes in seawater carbonate chemistry, such as ocean acidification, on shell formation in tropical marine bivalves. The research will be conducted at the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and the University of Hawai'i, Hilo. The project aims to identify the specific carbonate...
ONE POTENTIAL BENEFIT OF OCEAN ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT IS REVERSING OCEAN ACIDIFICATION, WHICH CAN IMPACT MARINE LIFE LIKE CORALS, CLAMS, AND CRABS. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND RISKS OF OCEAN ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT ON PACIFIC TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL CORALS AND CRUSTOSE CORALLINE ALGAE. THE PROJECT'S GOAL IS TO UNDERSTAND IF OCEAN ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT CAN HELP COUNTERACT THE EFFECTS OF OCEAN ACIDIFICATION ON CORAL REEFS, WHICH ARE IMPORTANT ECOSYSTEMS FOR MARINE BIODIVERSITY AND HUMAN COMMUNITIES. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH ARE TO IDENTIFY HOW CORALS AND CRUSTOSE CORALLINE ALGAE RESPOND TO IMMEDIATE ALKALINITY ADDITIONS AND TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF CHRONIC AND ACUTE EXPOSURE TO OCEAN ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT. THE STUDY WILL EXPLORE WHETHER BIOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS ARE PRIMARILY ATTRIBUTED TO ALKALINITY OR OTHER FACTORS LIKE POTENTIAL TRACE METAL TOXICITY FROM THE MINERALS USED IN OCEAN ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT.
