Description

This project aims to fill critical gaps in our understanding of the abundance and distribution of spinner dolphins (stenella longirostris longirostris) in the o AHU/4-islands region of the hawaiian islands. Current knowledge on this stock is scarce, with data on abundance, distribution, age structure, and/or movements outdated or largely unknown. By using line-transect distance sampling techniques, in conjunction with photo-identification and unoccupied aerial vehicles (USA or drone) the project will collect the data on the abundance and population demographics of spinner dolphins in the maui NUI region. When analyzed these data will provide essential information for developing effective management plans and conservation measures aimed at up to date population monitoring and reducing human impacts on this ecologically important species.
