Description

Despite the fact that numerous studies have examined water chemistry in offshore areas where hypoxia is frequent, temporal and geographic trends in salinity, carbonate chemistry, and other water quality parameters in northern gulf of mexico (GOM) coastal areas where oyster hatcheries would draw water are unknown. Moreover, the manner in which salinity, carbonate chemistry, and other water quality parameters interact and how that interaction may correlate with hatchery production in the northern GOM is unknown. Because the GOM region requires an increase in hatchery capacity and technologies to maintain and expand the oyster industry, take advantage of increasing demand for locally produced seafood, and expand economic benefits in coastal communities, there is a strong need to characterize the dynamics of brackish water carbonate chemistry along northern GOM coast including both mississippi river influenced coastal environments and other estuarine environments especially during the seas
